BACKGROUND

Executive Transitions

Barbara Gilvar has facilitated executive transitions since 1979 as a partner in a large firm, where she taught executive transition philosophy and methodology to all new employees, and in her own firm since 1989. She has been a presenter at conferences, provides workshops on executive transitions, has taught search methodology within large organizations and has served as a mentor in programs for emerging leaders. Barbara has a commitment and an understanding of how to recruit candidates from under-represented groups. Among her clients are cultural, environmental, health care, human service and social service organizations, public and independent schools, colleges and universities and foundations.

She created and edited The Search Handbook and has written a new and more comprehensive guide, The Art of Hiring Leaders: A Guide for Nonprofit Organizations which has been nominated for the Alliance on Nonprofit Management’s 2008 Terry McAdam Book Award. Grant Writing

Since 1979 Barbara Gilvar has written grants funded by local foundations, national foundations and city and state government. The nonprofit organizations have varied enormously but all grant applications were successful. While working with boards or executive directors on grant writing, her knowledge of nonprofit organizations has brought additional benefits to the organizations and to their fund-raising efforts.
